Bow – a comfortable, sustainable chair

Bow is a stylish, sustainable chair designed by Jonas Forsman. The back has a comfortable ‘give’, and the chair’s fully demountable design allows its parts to be replaced at the component level, in order to renovate and update Bow over time.

Simple, stylish designs that last

When Jonas Forsman designed Bow, he wanted to create comfortable seating that can be updated for long life. The design is based on a circular concept that conceals nothing, but instead allows the components to be part of the expression, which is reflected in the harmonious shapes that contrast with the strict tubular steel frame. The Scandinavian design unites soft, warm wood with industrial steel in a combination that makes Bow a versatile chair that looks good in many different interior furnishing concepts and is easy to pair with other furniture. Jonas Forsman wanted the back to feel enveloping, like a curve building up the steel tube from behind and running around the back. The generous, soft lines of the seat and back follow the occupant’s body and reinforce the feeling of invitation. The name Bow reflects the shape and ‘give’ in the back, which provides flexibility, making the chair comfortable to sit in even for long periods.

Bow is available with or without armrests. Both variants are stackable and connectible. The armchair can also be hung from the edge of the table, which facilitates cleaning and makes it the perfect choice for various types of educational environments, auditoriums and dining halls. Bow is a versatile chair whose stylish expression also goes well in conference rooms and meeting rooms, touch-down spaces, restaurants and cafés. Bow is available with an upholstered or wooden back (black stained ash, light ash or oak) to adapt its expression to its setting.

Modular design

How do we build a comfortable chair with ‘give’ that is also modular? We use spring steel to create extra comfort in a somewhat simple four-legged chair. Since adhesives often contain environmentally hazardous chemicals and phase-out substances, the construction has not been glued together. Instead, Bow is assembled using mounting sleeves, making it unlike any other as it’s possible to disassemble and update it. The fabric is also not glued to the foam, and the seat and back are secured to the frame with screws, making Bow suitable for renovating, reupholstering and finally sorting.

To achieve the curved shape that adapts to the back in both directions, the chair is made from a three-dimensionally moulded shell. Bow bears the Möbelfakta label and comes with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) that lists the product’s contents and environmental impact.

Sustainable material and demountable design

The inspiration for Bow comes from a striving to create sustainable furniture that lasts longer. Bow is made from pure, sustainable materials from FSC®-certified wood, recycled metals and recyclable plastic. In line with EFG’s design philosophy, Bow is fully demountable, and thanks to its layer-by-layer design, it can not only be renovated and updated if the components wear out, but its design can also be modernized if necessary. In layer-by-layer designs, only one layer need be replaced to achieve a completely different appearance, which also makes it easy to maintain and update chairs already in the market by using spare parts. For example, it’s possible to convert a variant without armrests into an armchair, and vice versa. Because Bow’s design can be updated in many ways, it has a long lifetime and will meet tomorrow’s sustainability standards.
